Philippine earthquake kills several, destroys buildings, & triggers a tsunami warning now canceled

Yes — the earthquakes did cause actual damage and casualties. Here's a summary of what's been reported so far:

---

Damage & Losses

From the "2025 Davao earthquakes" reports:

At least eight people died, including from collapsing walls, falling debris, heart attacks triggered by the quake, and a landslide in a gold-mining village.

In the Pantukan (Davao de Oro) area, a landslide killed three people and injured ten.

Twenty-one houses were destroyed (20 in Tarragona, 1 in Manay).

Another 28 houses were damaged (beyond total destruction).

One hospital (Manay District Hospital) sustained damage.

The whole Davao Oriental province suffered a blackout (power outage).

In Davao City, many buildings were cracked or shaken; 300 people were reported injured.

Universities and colleges (Ateneo de Davao, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao) reported structural damage.

Infrastructure damage included cracked roads, blocked roads (due to debris, fallen poles), and damage to bridges.

Other reports also corroborate additional losses:

AP reports say the quake triggered landslides, building damage, and other disruptions.

Some facades of churches, roads, and bridges near the epicenter were damaged.

In local media, officials in Davao Oriental noted "some buildings were reported to have been damaged."

The Guardian mentions power disruptions in Mindanao, visible cracks in buildings, and shaken infrastructure in towns close to the epicenter.

Here's a recent case of a tsunami warning tied to a major earthquake — and what's known so far:

---

What Happened

On October 10, 2025, a powerful offshore earthquake struck near Davao Oriental, in southern Philippines.

The quake was initially reported at magnitude 7.6 (later revised in some reports), with a focal depth of about 20 km.

Because of its offshore location and strength, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a tsunami warning for multiple provinces including Davao Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, and Leyte.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) also issued alerts, saying hazardous waves could occur within roughly 300 km of the epicenter.

Indonesia (northern Sulawesi, Papua) also issued warnings due to possible wave propagation.

---

Impact & Status

Some coastal residents observed water receding (a known precursor sign in tsunami events) and evacuated to higher ground.

Waves were recorded in some places, though not confirmed at extremes in all reports.

The tsunami warnings were later canceled by PHIVOLCS (for the first quake at 13:43 PST) once assessments showed no large destructive waves.

A second quake (magnitude ~6.8) struck later the same day, and PHIVOLCS again issued (and later canceled) warnings for some provinces.

"God's Perfect Timing | Christian Reformed Church...December 2019, a  6.8 earthquake rocked  Davao del Sur, Mindanao,  Philippines."  World Renew committed to respond to this disaster and expected to have a team in Davao del Sur by March 2020. But due to travel restrictions put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19, relief efforts had to be delayed. During all these delays, World Renew's International Project Manager Jeff Cosico was impatient to address the recovery needs of Mindanaoans. Finally, with COVID-19 restrictions lifted in October 2020, he rallied a team to travel to the region."
